2. Click Run to install the definition update file immediately. Or, click Save to save the file to the computer. If you click Save, remember the folder where you saved the file.
3. To install the saved file, follow these steps:

Double-click the file, and then click OK.

Right-click the file, and then click Run As Administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password or click Continue.
4. When the definition update file runs, a file extraction dialog box appears. The dialog box indicates that the definition update is installing. After the file extraction dialog box closes, you can verify that the virus and spyware definitions have been updated. To do this, open Microsoft Security Essentials, click Update, and then examine the virus and spyware definitions status.

Hiring sentiment at 18-month high

Bangalore, whose job market is characterised by high attrition and also a positive hiring sentiment, has seen its employment outlook rise considerably to become double that of the other cities.

According to the latest Employment Outlook Report for the period July - September 2010 released by TeamLease Services, the hiring sentiment is at an 18-month high for the present quarter beginning July and ending September 2010.

Meanwhile, tier-II cities experienced a significant increase (3 per cent) in hiring intent to 19 per cent — an all time high, indicative of the talent supply potential of these geographies. Hiring at the junior and entry levels of organisational hierarchy are set to make a strong comeback with 17 per cent and 11% increases in hiring intent — the biggest rise after more than 24 months of stagnant or negative growth in index value.

‘Best salary package’ remains the top-most reason for an employee to look for better opportunities in the IT sector in Bangalore.

The Employment Outlook for the quarter has moved up by 6 per cent and stands at 64 per cent. The Business Outlook Index has also risen by 5 per cent to 61 index points, but doubles itself over the course of four quarters.

TeamLease releases the Employment Outlook Report every quarter after a survey administered to the HR heads, CEOs and Senior Management of leading companies in India.

The study, which covered 568 companies in the latest round, focuses on the employment growth potential, the business outlook and hiring forecasts with relation to the location and the company profile.

City schools are going learn online to keep guardians up to date with their wards’ progress and help students learn online lessons they have missed in class.

The stress is on regular interaction between parents and teachers and even the principal. Lakshmipat Singhania Academy (LSA), for instance, is would facilitate the process through their website.

“Each parent will soon have a log-in id for the school’s website. Information on a child’s progress in academics and his extra-curricular feats will be provided on the website. The lessons taught in class on each day will be mentioned,” says Meena Kak, the principal of LSA.

“Teachers will also write about special achievements of a child, such as a painting or a creative writing assignment done well,” she adds.

Amishi Vora, parent of a LSA student, feels that access to such information will be very helpful. “If a parent or a child cannot go to school daily or if the child has not understood the teacher’s instructions clearly, an interactive website can be of immense help.”

Newer schools like Sri Sri Academy and South City International have websites that are updated at least once a week. Among the older ones, Modern High School is redesigning its website with the help of former students.

In some schools, the website has become the gateway to virtual learning. The Heritage School’s e-pathshala is one such project.

Principal Seema Sapru says: “Whatever we teach on the interactive board in the class, including the voice of the teacher, is recorded and uploaded on our website. This helps students who were absent from school to catch up with lessons they have missed and for others to revise their lessons, especially during exams.”

Regular, direct communication between teachers and parents promises benefits.

Clinical psychologist Rajyasree Bandopadhyay cites cases where children were affected because their teachers wrote complaints in their diary so that their parents would see.

“Children these days are very sensitive and we have seen quite a few student suicides in the recent past after parent calls. Interactive websites will allow a teacher to discuss a child’s shortcomings with the parent without the child knowing,” she says.

“We usually make appointments or communicate over email with the principal, but if there is a separate id for each class teacher and each parent, the discussions will be more focussed and useful,” says Tapasi Sarkar, whose son is in Calcutta Boys’ School.

Some are wary about the misuse of the online communication channel.

“I am a bit apprehensive that once virtual communication starts, some parents might cross the limit and start abusing or finding fault with every aspect of a class,” says Malini Bhagat, the principal of Mahadevi Birla Girls’ Higher Secondary School.

She feels parents should only have partial information about what goes on in a classroom and should only be allowed to comment on certain issues.

Joseph Mathew, the principal of Indus Valley World School, also feels that “emailing is enough for the moment”.

TechHub startup centre gets Google backing

London's newest startup workspace and networking center for TechHub has just scored sponsorship from Google, it announced today, ahead of the the launch party on Friday and official opening on Monday 12 July. TechHub has scored funding from Google

TechHub is based at Silicon Roundabout on Old Street and is already sponsored by Pearson. Membership, with various access to events, cheap hot desking and room hire, is £300 per year and desk space is £275 per month. For startups who are ready to move out of the spare bedroom but don't want the expense and commitment of a commercial lease, these kind of shared workspaces work well.

TechHub is designed to be a central meeting place for visiting entrepreneurs and investors, a venue for tech events and networking and shared workspace. A mobile testing lab is also planned, and Google has said it has more planned for the project. Given Google's particular focus on mobile in London, that's likely to be a focus and TechHub would be a likely location for more hack events. That's a pretty simple way to put yourself in the thick of it.

China Money Rate Climbs as AgriBank Sells Shares to Investors

China’s money-market rate climbed for the first time in three days on speculation Agricultural Bank of China Ltd.’s sale of shares will drain liquidity in the financial system.

Agricultural Bank, the country’s largest lender by customers, plans to raise as much as $20.1 billion by selling stock in Shanghai and Hong Kong. It started offering shares online to both individual and institutional investors today. Industrial Securities Co. estimated in a report today as much as 500 billion yuan ($73.8 billion) will be locked up during the online money subscription period.

“The increasing demand for cash is caused by the online money subscription of AgriBank’s shares,” said Chen Liang, a bond analyst at Guohai Securities Co. in Shenzhen. “After investors who fail to secure full allocations of stock receive their funds back on July 9, the seven-day repo rate will drop to about 2.3 percent.”

The seven-day repurchase rate, which measures interbank funding availability, rose 19 basis points to 2.69 percent as of the 4:30 p.m. close in Shanghai, according to the National Interbank Funding Center. Yesterday’s close of 2.50 percent was the lowest since June 10.

The People’s Bank of China kept the yield on one-year bills at 2.0929 percent at a sale today, unchanged for a fourth week, according to a statement on the central bank’s website. China should focus on stable foreign trade growth to strengthen the economy, Xinhua news agency cited Vice Premier Wang Qishan as saying in a meeting yesterday.

“The stable bill yield shows the authorities are taking a wait and see approach,” said Guohai’s Chen. “The rate may stay stable till August.”

Weaker Yuan

The yuan weakened 0.06 percent to 6.7801 per dollar, according to the China Foreign Exchange Trade System. It’s appreciated 0.7 percent since a two-year currency peg was relaxed on June 19. The central bank set the reference rate at 6.7790, 0.08 percent weaker than yesterday’s.

“The yuan’s spot rate is simply following the fixing today,” said Guan Jiaying, an analyst in Beijing at China Citic Bank Co., a unit of China’s biggest state investment company.

Government bonds rose on optimism the central bank will refrain from pulling money from the interbank market to sustain expansion in the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

Risks to Growth

Premier Wen Jiabao said over the weekend the government faces increasing “dilemmas” as the impact of the global financial crisis is more severe than expected. He pledged to maintain continuity in setting policy amid “very complicated” situations at home and abroad.

“The market believes the central bank will ensure ample liquidity as economic growth faces risks of a slowdown,” said Tang Guohui, a bond analyst at Industrial Securities Co. in Shanghai.

The yield on the 3.25% note due May 2020 declined three basis points to 3.22%, and the price of the security gained 0.25 per 100 yuan face amount to 100.29, according to the China Interbank Bond Market. A basis point is 0.01% point.

Google acts to fix YouTube flaw exploited by hackers.

YouTube has been forced to fix a flaw allowing hackers to bombard users with fake pop-up messages and redirect them to adult sites. Hackers placed code in the comments section, under targeted videos, that would run when people watched the clip.

In some cases, a pop-up screen appeared reporting that the Canadian singer, Justin Bieber, had died in a car crash. Google, which owns YouTube, said that it had fixed the problem "about two hours" after it was discovered.

Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities are relatively simple attacks that allow hackers to place code into web pages. In the YouTube incident, hackers used JavaScript code and HTML, both commonly used on web pages.

Security experts said that although in most cases the code was relatively benign, it has been used for more malicious purposes. Phishing is a common tactic used by cyber criminals and involves using fake websites to lure people into revealing details such as bank accounts or login names.

Google said it was "continuing to study the vulnerability to help prevent similar issues in the future". When the vulnerability was first reported, rumors suggested that YouTube was infected with a virus.

Facebook Page Banned by Pakistan Is Back Online

The controversial page of the social networking site Facebook which led the Pakistan government to ban the entire site was back online Saturday, was reopened after two days. It was removed on Thursday after one of the moderators had his e-mail and Skype account hacked into, and his personal data revealed, according to a post on the page on Saturday. The moderator then got scared and deleted the page, a blog, and e-mails.

Having over 108,000 fans and over 11,700 photos posted on Saturday, though the Facebook users who created the page put it back up Saturday, some users in India were able to access it for only a brief time before their access was once again blocked. The page "Everybody draw Mohammed Day!" had some caricatures of Prophet Mohammed, which led a court in Pakistan to order the site to be blocked with a lot of protest on the streets of Pakistan.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) ordered on Wednesday to block the social networking site Facebook and Youtube until further orders for displaying "sacrilegious" content. It said it had also blocked over 450 links on the Internet that contained derogatory material.

According to Facebook, when dealing with user-generated content on global Web sites, there are occasions where content that is illegal in one country is not, or may even be protected, in another. Most companies, including Facebook, approach this issue by preventing certain content from being shown to users in the countries where it is illegal.

Google Pac-Man is eating up work time

According to a recent study, The Pac-Man game Google put on its home page has gobbled up almost five million hours of work time. The playable version of the classic video game was put on Google's front page on 21 May to celebrate 30 years since the launch of Pac-Man in Japan.So Google reworked the game so the layout was arranged around letters forming its name.

But it proved so popular that Google has now made it permanently available on its own page.

As a result, many people played and for how long were gathered by software firm Rescue Time. It makes time-tracking software keeping an eye on what workers do and where they go online. On an average most people conduct about 22 searches on the Google page, each one lasting about 11 seconds. But putting Pac-Man on the page boosted that time by an average of about 36 seconds.

This is a relatively low figure because only a minority realised that the logo was playable. To play, people had to click on the "insert coin" button which replaced the more familiar "I'm Feeling Lucky" button on 21 and 22 May. Extrapolating this up across the 504 million unique users who visit the main Google page day-to-day, representing an increase of 4.8 million hours - equal to about 549 years.

In dollar terms, assuming people are paid $25 (£17.50) an hour, this equates to about $120m in lost productivity. For that money, it as suggested, it would be possible to hire all Google's employees and put them to work for about six weeks.

Think Programming

Programming is also known used for coding, hacking, developing and software engineering, among other things. The age old debate over whether software development should be considered a creative endeavor or simply a rote, technical one. RIL planning to expand itself in key markets

Adressing RIL's shareholders, Reliance Industries (RIL) Chairman and MD Mukesh Ambani, said RIL would focus on improving its portfolio, increasing efficiency, product innovation and expanding its businesses to get closer to key markets. He said, within a year of start of gas supply from KG D6, gas supply has been ramped up to over 60 million standard cubic metres per day (mscmd) of natural gas and 35,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

This increased availability of natural gas has resulted in higher volume and cheaper cost of indigenously produced fertilisers, saving the country Rs 4,000 crore per annum in subsidies also resulting in a significant improvement of 30% in gas-based power generation in the country and the replacement of more expensive liquid fuel for refining, steel and petrochemical industries.

RIL has achieved a turnover in its business over Rs 2,00,000 crore or $44.6 billion and its net profit increased to Rs 16,236 crore ($3.6 billion) and has announced a dividend of 70 per cent amounting to Rs 2,430 crore ($541 million), including dividend distribution tax and has exported products worth Rs 1,10,176 crore ($24.5 billion) against Rs 89,199 crore in the previous year. Its exports, which represent 55 per cent of RIL’s turnover, were to 123 countries. Its Petroleum products constitute 85% and petrochemicals account for 15% of the exports.

This year, Petroleum Trust has sold 88.8 million equity shares (adjusted for bonus issue) of RIL and has realised Rs 9,334 crore. As on March 31, RIL’s debt was at Rs 62,495 crore ($13.9 billion) to which RIL's cash and cash equivalents as on March 31 amounted to Rs 21,874 crore ($4.9 billion). These are placed in bank fixed deposits, certificates of deposits, government securities and bonds.

Online Learning Shows Surprising Rise in Student Comprehension

There are a number of reasons why people enrol at online universities. For example, cost is a leading factor considering online schools tend to cost 40% less than a brick and mortar school. The study primarily concentrated on adults holding regular jobs who were getting their degrees outside of their 9-to-5; who also happened to be the biggest demographic group for distance learning. It also included students in elementary, middle and high schools. Regardless of age level, the results uncovered online classes yielded higher performance.

The key reason for these results was time. Students were able to move at their own pace. They were able to manage their valuable time resources for better effect. This enabled them to focus on what they found interesting or problematic. That freedom also found them spending more time working with fellow classmates to re-examine what they learn. When all was said and done, they were maximising their educational environ.

Another thing that helped was the use of different teaching tools than those used in campus-based courses. These included videos, online quizzes, study groups and online guidance. Despite this broad range of choices, the study discovered learning rates were not inhibited by the technology. Yet it was time management that was uncovered as the most valuable part of students' results.

This didn't mean it all comes together easily. Online learning course teachers work hard creating the lessons for their students to maximise this valuable learning time. Serious schools also had to employ premium and the most modern computer systems and experienced IT staff, learning management software, student services, libraries and staff to train their professors on how to teach online.

Repeatable Code - a Step Up From Reusable Code

I think a generally acceptable definition of reusable code could be "code or functionality that will probably be useful in one or more future projects." It's a category of code that few managers or developers, in my experience, seem to pay much attention to until they need it.

This is unfortunate since, in my opinion, reusable code, when upgraded to repeatable code, has the potential to save big on development costs.

What Is Reusable Code?

From what I can gather, there are five primary sources of reusable code.

• Components (objects) that expose their functionality through an interface.
• User controls.
• Repositories that use a database and accept a limited number of languages.
• Websites where code snippets and sample projects are freely exchanged.
• Other projects.

Components and user controls are great if the reusable code is appropriate for encapsulation. You don't have to be concerned with reusing code, only with reusing functionality. There is, however, a plethora of reusable code that would be very nice to have handy, but, doesn't work in a component or user control. Code repositories address this type of reusable code.

Unfortunately, "how to code" repositories tend to be limited. They can usually only be used with a few languages (normally one). In addition, repository programs typically use a database which makes the sharing of stored code less than easy.

While code repositories are typically very intelligent with the language they are designed to store, they are, in my opinion, usually not known for their flexibility when preparing that code for insertion into a new project. The ability to easily adapt reusable code to new situations "on the fly" is essential, in my option, if code is to be truly repeatable.

Exchange sites make reusable code readily available to anyone with access to the internet. This free exchange of knowledge and specific coding solutions is ideal in concept. The usual implementation, however, has, in my opinion, room for improvement. Retrieving immediately useful code snippets from exchange sites is great when it happens. Unfortunately, code that can be retrieved and plugged directly into the project you are working on is, in my opinion, rare on exchange sites.

Similar to exchange sites, the store of fully or partially completed projects that a developer has worked on provide a gold mine of reusable code. However, this type of reusable code, like gold, must be found and then mined.

The search for, and mining of reusable code in other projects is normally done only by the developer of the project because that person is usually the only one who has any idea what nuggets are to be found. This "one person show" type of reusable code makes this buried code of limited availability to anyone else.

• do you know which methods are most cost effective?

• if you plan to lease or rent can you easily accommodate additional staff, stock and customers as your business grows?
• do you need parking facilities? Is is available?
• can the premises be fitted out to suit, without too much of an investment from you?

Suppliers

• who will they be?
• is there a minimum purchase amount?
• what is their lead time?
• are they reliable - can they provide a consistent and reliable service?
• do their costs enable you to make a profit?

Equipment

• will you be using specialised equipment?
• what are the costs to service or repair this equipment?
• are spare parts readily available?
• if entering a declining industry how available will this equipment, and/or spare parts, be in the future?
• are special skills required to operate this equipment?
• will you lease or buy your equipment?

Staff

• how many staff will you require?
• do they need specific skills or training?
• do you know the hidden costs of hiring staff?

Finances
